Gregg Chadwick will have a booth at the inaugural Los Angeles edition of The Other Art Fair which comes to Downtown Los Angeles from March 15-18. Chadwick will show a selection of artworks from his traveling exhibition Mystery Train, which examines the mythos of America as seen through the physical and cultural history of the railroad in the United States, and also a new series of works that engage the viewer in the story of Los Angeles.

Hosted at the Majestic Downtown, and presented by the world's leading online art gallery Saatchi Art, the Fair showcases work by 110 talented emerging artists, each hand picked by a selection committee of art world experts. Art lovers can visit the fair with the confidence that they are buying from the very best and most promising emerging artists in a unique and immersive experience.

With his music, words and images, Sergio Arau has inspired me to create a series of paintings that feature him as the main character in my painted movies. Rock Star, actor, director, screenwriter, and artist Sergio Arau has often performed while wearing gear honoring Mexico's most famous wrestling star El Santo (The Man In the Silver Mask). Known as lucha libre, Mexican wrestlers such as El Santo are defenders of the poor and vulnerable. By taking on the persona of the Luchador (wrestler), Josh Kun writes in Audiotopia: Music, Race, and America, Sergio Arau and his bands have mixed "the traditional with the contemporary, the rural with the urban, the American with the Mexican, the charro with the rockero." 

My paintings in Luchador's Dream carry Sergio Arau into a Los Angeles seemingly pulled from the lyrics of his songs or gathered from scenes of his films that were left on the cutting room floor.

Jesse Malin: Fox News Funk from Meet Me at the End of the World

Jesse Malin's new EP, Meet Me at the End of the World, is out. Produced by Joseph Arthur, this collection of four new songs timely addresses our current Trumpian tribulation and is sparking some major conversations across the music world. Lucinda Williams was so inspired by Malin's Meet Me at the End of the World, that, as Fran C. Anderson reports in Rolling Stone, Williams "hopped on the phone with the D Generation frontman ... for a wide-ranging chat about their approach to songwriting, politics, Canadian electro dynamo Peaches, and a possible future collaboration." In their conversation Williams and Malin earnestly conversed about the mix of politics and music in their art. Williams said,"Anybody who says politics and music don't mix is, that's just in your face stupid." 
Malin replied,"You walk out your door and it's political. You're dealing with it. You need gas in your car, you need food, everything is always just class-related, and rock music has always had an awareness of class and separation in the downtrodden." Continuing this thought Malin expressed to Nate Herwick on Grammy.com that, "And [I thought about] how much the media is owned by the government, by the big corporations, so you're not getting the full story. I think [this song is] a call to people to go beyond that, go with their guts and their hearts. You have got to treat the people around you with love, but you also have to question the powers that be, because as much as I love this country and this planet, there are some people that are out to line their own pockets and have an agenda."

Summing up the album Malin said to Williams,"the music is what brings us together, and we need it right now. We need each other. We need to stand together, and support each other, and give the message, which is really love. I mean, to me, Meet Me at the End of the World as a record is about survival. And you have to live your life like it could be the last day."

Giving Back: 38th Annual Venice Family Clinic's Art Walk & Auctions

Spring was erupting all around me in the city that many call the Berkeley of the Midwest. Blossoms covered the trees shading hundreds of crimson gown clad graduates. The air seemed to be filled with new hopes and new roads to follow. Inspiration carried me as I boarded the plane to return west to Los Angeles. As I gazed out my window, I watched the landscape turn from bright spring green, to dusty farmland, to snow covered peaks, to red desert, to the violet carpet of jacaranda blossoms as we flew into the L.A. basin. The diverse landscape echoed our diverse country. I felt joy as our plane shuddered upon touchdown. Lots of new art to create. And lots of pressing causes to give back to. My painting Museum Whispers (de Young) was inspired by the beautifully renovated de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The de Young cafe is a permanent fixture of the new building. A gorgeous indoor/outdoor space filled with art lovers and wonderful food. Often, the ebb and flow of visitors at an art museum provides the subject matter for my paintings. Giving Back - Hospitality House Annual Auction I was honored that the Andrea Schwartz Gallery in San Francisco asked me to donate my painting "Jersey Cantos" to the 2017 Annual Hospitality House Art Auction. Founded in 1967 in response to the large influx of homeless LGBT youth in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, Hospitality House has a long history developing peer-based and culturally appropriate programs for the communities we serve. Their programs create a positive impact, raising the quality of life for all residents and making our neighborhoods healthy and rich with diversity and culture.

Basque Ghosts: A Review of Gabriel Urza’s First Novel — ”All That Followed”

Author Gabriel Urza’s family has roots in Spain’s Basque region. His new novel “All That Followed” shows us the faces of civil wars — the Spanish Civil War of the 1930's, the Basque separatist movement, and the small wars that families and couples often find themselves fighting. Urza recounts a fictional tale based on real events that explores the kidnapping and killing of a young politician by even younger separatists in the late 1990s. Urza limns a town where everyone knows where bullet holes were left by Franco’s murderous thugs decades before. Ghosts of the murdered seem to arrive in the slanted rain — txirimiri in Basque. In a Rashomon like retelling of the politician’s murder, three disparate voices speak in alternating chapters: Joni, an aging American expat teacher. Mariana, the victim’s young wife. And Iker, a student activist turned abductor. Joni and Mariana’s pain and loss are balanced with Iker’s hunger for meaning and action and ultimate indoctrination into violence. Much like the current appeal of ISIS for many young men and women in Europe, Iker finds acceptance into a group of like minded if not lost compadres. Urza’s novel does not give us easy answers, but instead focuses on the human costs of political and personal devotion and unfaithfulness.

Urza writes with a deep poetic connection to the Basque landscape and the struggles of its people. Highly recommended.

The Golden Ratio in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Frescoes

A fascinating new study by Brazilian researchers* entitled "More Than A Neuroanatomical Representation in The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo Buonarroti, A Representation of the Golden Ratio" presents a compelling look at Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescoes. (*DEIVIS DE CAMPOS, TAIS MALYSZ, JO~AO ANTONIO BONATTO-COSTA, GERALDO PEREIRA JOTZ, LINO PINTO DE OLIVEIRA JUNIOR, ANDANDREA OXLEY DA ROCHA)

"We report our use of Image Pro Plus Software 6.0 to demonstrate mathematical evidence that Michelangelo painted “The Creation of Adam” using the Divine Proportion/Golden Ratio (G R) (1.6). The GR is classically associated with greater structural efficiency and is found in biological structures and works of art by renowned artists. Thus, according to the evidence shown in this article, we can suppose that the beauty and harmony recognized in all Michelangelo’s works may not be based solely on his knowledge of human anatomical proportions, but that the artist also probably knew anatomical structures that conform to the GR display greater structural efficiency."

 "In this context, an important mathematical relationship is found in countless works of art from the Renaissance period (Livio, 2002). The mathematical relationship known as the Divine Proportion/GoldenRatio (GR) (U 5 1.6) is the ratio between two lines of unequal length, where the ratio between the length of the shorter line and the longer line is the same as the ratio between length of the longer line and the sum of the lengths (Hutchison and Hutchison, 2010), as follows: b/a 5 (a1b)/b = U  1.6 (Fig. 1).The GR is classically associated with greater structural efficiency (Livio, 2002) and has puzzled scientists for centuries due to its frequent occurrence in nature. Moreover, intriguing studies have shown the presence of GR in the organization of numerous natural structures, such as the shape of spiral galaxies(Livio, 2002; Hutchison and Hutchison, 2010), the g-Ratio of the nervous fibers (De Campos, 2014), spiral molluscan shells and plants (Newell et al., 2008). In addition, GR can be found not only in natural phenomena, but also in a variety of works by architects and designers, in famous musical compositions and the works of many other artists, including Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Durer (Livio, 2002)."
